Wow, what a great book… I’m not sure why I’ve never heard of this book. After listening and letting it suck me in, I wanted to spread the word. It turns out that this book is a internationally known and translated into over 65 languages selling over 145 million copies. After finding these facts I feel like I was living under a rock, ha. Then I realized that I am curious to learn more. My mind is young :).
I’m not in love with giving a book report, or am I all about giving the story away…
I feel like it should be a required reading for freshmen in college or a graduation present to anyone that has just graduated high school.
I posted a link to order the book on tape yesterday… if you wanna listen you go here.
The book will relate to almost anyone, the person who is exploring and the person that is grounded. Its speaks about the nomadic shepherd and the storekeeper, the psychology behind their decisions to chose the way they make money, and pointed out the way one looks at the other pasture and sees it as greener at times.
At one point the main character sells everything he owns and walks into a world where he doesn’t know a soul or the language…
All he has is his character, his experiences, his uniqueness, and his bag of money…at some point we all need to learn that a bag of money isn’t enough. The main character seemed to be looking up at the bottom of the hole that he had fallen into. It was very interesting to watch him do whatever it took to stay on the path that he was searching, yet be creative enough to alter tactics to get the job done… He ended up running into a group of people all in search of the “The Alchemist”, who is someone that can make lead turn into gold… Wouldn’t that be awesome to know how to do that, since lead is so cheap and gold is so expensive. I would just have to put in the time and become a gold factory… How Much money could I make doing that?? Lots of it…
Though unsure of the topic at first glance, I find the title very fitting. We all need to find our purpose, to become a true “alchemist” and understand our gift to the world… How do you think that the alchemist found out that he could turn lead into gold? I’m still not sure if the book explains how he found out that he could perform this miracle. I guess gifts like that are just learned over time, or maybe discovered in your 20’s. I hope to find out my purpose, I’ll pay attention to what I’m paying attention!
It was a quick listen with many lessons that I may have missed, as I see myself still unsure of somethings as I write this today. I realize that I love to listen to books while driving to school instead of listening to the news or the radio. I can’t wait to see what book Mr. Gary recommends next for us 🙂 I shall re-listen to the book before our next supper!
